F. Matthias Alexander

Frederick Matthias Alexander was an Australian actor who developed the educational process that is today called the Alexander Technique – a form of education that is applied to recognize and overcome reactive, habitual limitations in movement and thinking.

 BornJanuary 20, 1869, Wynyard

DiedOctober 10, 1955, London Limily/Earning The Money

ORIGINS OF THE TECHNIQUE

Alexander was an actor specialising in reciting Shakesperean verse. He started getting hoarse after performances which then deteriorated into throat pain and losing his voice. Doctors of his time were not able to help him so he decided he would have to find his own cure.

He observed by means of mirrors, what he was doing when he developed the discomfort and gradually over many years, developed a technique that overcame his difficulties.

Finding his Technique helped other people with a wide array of problems, he began teaching it full time.

Spending time in England as well as the United States teaching, he  also opened training schools for teachers and so the the Technique became available to more people.
